Domain guide

Domain extensions explained

The categories

  • Generic (gTLD) — .com, .net, .org. Open to anyone, anywhere. .com is still the default people type
  • Country (ccTLD) — .ke, .ng, .za. Tied to a country, and often to eligibility rules. They signal where you are, which helps in local search
  • Regional — .africa for a business trading across the continent
  • New generic — .shop, .app, .dev and hundreds more. Some are genuinely useful; most are a distraction unless the name is perfect

Everything we sell is on the [registration page](route:domains), with its live price.

The .ke namespace

Kenya’s registry, KeNIC, divides .ke into second-level namespaces with different purposes:

  • .co.ke — commercial. The default for a Kenyan business, and the one most people type
  • .or.ke — non-profits, associations and NGOs
  • .ne.ke — network infrastructure
  • .ac.ke — accredited higher education
  • .sc.ke — accredited schools
  • .go.ke — government, not available commercially
  • .me.ke — personal names

Registering directly at .ke is also possible and shorter, though .co.ke remains what most Kenyan customers expect to type.

Restricted extensions

Some extensions are not open to everyone, and the registry will ask for proof.

.ac.ke and .sc.ke need evidence of accreditation. .or.ke expects a genuine non-profit. Several country extensions elsewhere require a local presence or a registered company.

This is a registry rule, not a registrar preference — no registrar can waive it. What a good registrar does is tell you up front what will be asked for and handle the submission with you, rather than taking your money and leaving you to discover the requirement later.

Tell us what you are registering and we will say what the registry needs before you pay.

How many should you register?

Most businesses need one. Two is a reasonable precaution. More than three is usually money that would do more good elsewhere.

The one you use

Your country extension if you serve one market, .com if you serve several.

The one you protect

The other of those two, redirected to the first, so nobody else can trade on your name and so habit-typers still find you.

The ones you skip

Defensive registrations across dozens of new extensions. Nobody is going to mistake yourbusiness.xyz for you, and the registrations renew every year forever.

Frequently asked questions

Is .co.ke or .ke better for a Kenyan business?

`.co.ke` is what most Kenyan customers expect to type, so it is the safer default. `.ke` is shorter and increasingly recognised — plenty of businesses register both.

Do I need .com as well?

If it is available and affordable, it is worth owning and redirecting to your main site. It stops somebody else using your name and catches people who type .com by habit.

Can anyone register .ac.ke or .sc.ke?

No. Those are restricted to accredited institutions and schools, and the registry asks for proof. Tell us what you have and we will tell you whether it will satisfy them.

How much does a domain cost?

It depends on the extension. .com is $13.86, and every extension we sell is priced on the [domain registration page](route:domains), live from our billing system.

Do I need hosting as well?

No. A domain can be registered on its own and pointed anywhere, and you keep full DNS control either way. Most people add hosting when they are ready to build the site.

Can I move a domain I already own?

Yes. Unlock it at your current registrar, get the authorisation (EPP) code, and start the transfer here — your remaining registration time comes with you.
